Concerts under the Elms - Ohio University

ATHENS, Ohio (June 1, 2013) – The "Under the Elms" Summer Concert Series will present six free concerts this summer, beginning Wednesday, June 5, and continuing each consecutive week until Wednesday, July 3, with an additional performance on Wednesday, August 7. Each of these outdoor concerts begin at 7:00 pm on the College Green adjacent to Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

The "Under the Elms" Concert Band, or "Communiversity Band," is comprised of Ohio University faculty, students, and alumni, as well as community members from Athens and surrounding communities. The ensemble rehearses one night a week prior to each performance. The Music Director and Principal Conductor of "Under the Elms" is Ohio University's Director of Bands, Dr. Andrew Trachsel.

This year's series features guest conductors from around the country: Shelley Jagow from Wright State University and Robert Meunier from Drake University. There will also be several guest soloists, including Dr. Michele Fiala, Assistant Professor of Oboe at Ohio University, Dr. Jason Smith, Professor of Tuba at Ohio University, Joey Van Hassel, and Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Ohio University. On June 12, the Ohio Capital Winds, a semi-professional band from Columbus conducted by Catherine Hope-Cunningham, will share the concert with the Communiversity Band. The June 19 concert is in conjunction with the OHIO Summer Music Camp, a new initiative by the School of Music, and will include many camp participants as well as faculty soloists. On June 26, the participants of MOVING with MEANING: A Conductors Workshop will join guest clinician Robert Meunier to conduct the concert. The July 3 concert will feature patriotic music in observance of Independence Day, and include an unforgettable performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, complete with live cannon fire.

An additional special event of the season is "Mozart on the Green" Chamber music on Wednesday, August 7.

All of these events, generously supported by the College of Fine Arts, are open to all and free to the public. In the event of rain, concerts will be held in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics to the concerts.
